Honey, We’re Not in Paradise Anymore!

Dinner at our house last night –

Me – So honey, how was your day?

Adam – *gives me The Look*

Me – Are you ever going to stop blaming me?

Adam – Blame you? Why should I blame you? All you did was get us kicked out of The Garden of Eden where work was fun!

Me – Well, it wasn’t just me! You had a choice.

Adam – You’re right. It’s that slithering snake that’s to blame!

The old argument was interrupted when my boys walked in.

Abel (my youngest) – Mom! Cain won’t play shepherds with me!

Cain (my oldest) – You are such a tattle-tale!

Abel – Am not!

Cain – Are too!

Me – *rolls eyes to heaven* Just another day in paradise.

All families have problems. I can guarantee that it’s been this way since the very beginning of history. As wives and mothers we make mistakes. It’s as certain as the sun rising in the east and setting in the west. When we fail, we can’t go back in time to change what happened; instead, we have to try harder to not make future mistakes.

Unfortunately, no matter how hard we try, we’re going to mess up again. When that happens, we need to admit our failure and not put the blame on someone else. We are each responsible for the choices we make.

The good news is that our failures and shortcomings won’t keep us from God. Selfishness and weakness caused us to lose paradise, but love and forgiveness will help us to find a new paradise.

Blog Title: Belated Blessing

About Me: My name is Elizabeth and for years I rejoiced in the birth of other people’s children, but always longed for a baby of my own. As I grew older, I began to lose hope that I would ever be able to conceive. It was then that I discovered I was pregnant, proving all things are possible in the Lord!

Intended Audience: Women, especially over 40, who are trying to conceive, who are pregnant and who are mothers will all enjoy my blog.

Magical Moments: The First Kick

For so long I dreamed of the feeling of a babe growing in my womb. Often I found myself staring at the large rounded stomach of an expectant mother wondering how it felt to grow life within. What did it feel like when the little one waved his arms and kicked his feet? Did it hurt? Did it tickle?

At six months along my own stomach was round with life, but I had not felt any movement until the day my kinswoman Mary visited from Galilee.

I was busy sweeping the floors and preparing a mid-day meal when I heard her greeting from the door. At the sound of Mary’s voice the baby leaped in my womb and I was overcome with  joy, amazement, elation, and the Holy Spirit, for I knew in that second that it was the mother of the expected Messiah standing before me.

“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!” I exclaimed loudly to Mary. “But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” (Luke 1: 43-45 NIV)

How mysterious are the ways of the Lord! Here we were, two unconventional mothers: me, well past traditional child-bearing years, and Mary, still a young girl and still unwed. In society’s eyes, we were not suitable for impending motherhood, but in God’s eyes, we were special.

It’s clear now that God had had a greater plan for me all along. I only had to be patient and have faith. For all my sisters who long for a babe of their own, do not ever give up hope! God has a plan for all of us. Do not let the fact that we do not know his plan cause you to doubt. We must learn from the the prophet Isaiah who said, “’For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the LORD” (Isaiah 55:8 NIV).

A baby is worth the wait, no matter how long. All those years filled with longing, all those nights spent in prayer, and all those times I despaired were but a flicker of the candle’s flame when compared to the moment my child moved within me. That point in time will be forever engraved upon my heart.
